In Flicka Friends

Brian and Ruth Eklund wrote up their first night passage in Kara Du for Flicka Friends #36 (Fall 2005). In August 2005, after a couple of nights at the Isthmus on Catalina, they left at noon for Chula Vista Marina at San Diego — 98 miles, and as far south as one can go and stay in the States. An odd easterly kept them hard on the wind but moving at about five knots under full sail, and the sun went down with the boat some twenty miles off the coast.

The night turned memorable before it was properly dark. A blue whale surfaced alongside, sounded about twenty feet off the starboard side, then crossed the bow close enough that Brian put the tiller hard over. They started the engine and banged pots and pans to make sure the whale knew what they were, and it blew once more and headed off towards Catalina. They took no photographs and had no trouble staying awake on watch.
